I also use an application form when people apply to some events, which includes contact details and other relevant personal details, reasons for wanting to attend the workshop/ event and health issues.

Mailing lists and newsletters are used. I make it clear what you are signing up to when you subscribe to my newsletter. For the business, the only special category of data it is necessary for me to collect concerns physical and mental health. However, I recognise that users may volunteer other special category information while communicating with me.
